Different Country, Same State: On the Road with James Blunt is what it says on the label and that’s pretty much what’s in the tin. It’s an honest, amusing and occasionally shocking behind-the-scenes account of the 15-month All The Lost Souls world tour.
September 30th is when the book comes out, but you don’t have to wait that long to take a peek inside. In the weeks to come, I’m going to be posting a whole bunch of stuff about the book right here. It’ll include previously unseen pictures, excerpts from the book, interviews, and all sorts of associated goodies. So bookmark this page and stick around. Mine is a pretty amazing story.
I don’t know if you ever saw Almost Famous, the movie about a schoolboy who got the chance to write about a rock band for Rolling Stone magazine? This is a bit like that, only different. I’m just slightly older – well, actually a whole lot older than James and the band.
It’s not been easy, I can tell you. Travelling around the world with James has about the same effect on your physical and mental wellbeing as riding all top ten of the world’s fastest roller coasters, one after the other.
The highs are off the scale. But when your feet do occasionally touch the ground, they drag with exhaustion. Sure, you’re strapped in for the ride and it’s probable that you won’t actually come to any long-term harm (unless, of course, you count liver damage). However, there’s a slow realization that life as you thought you knew it is never going to be quite the same ever again.
Travel, they say, broadens the mind. Oh yeah? Try living on a tour bus and in hotels, going to 213 performances in 58 countries in just15 months.
Well, actually, I didn’t. What I did do was to tag along on the tour bus and in the dressing room for many months of the 2008-9 All The Lost Souls World Tour. I was that proverbial fly-on-the-wall, clutching a camera with my feelers and trying not to get swatted. This website is dedicated to the result.
